Today in class we talked about Constantine who was a Roman Emperor of Illyrian and Greek origin from 306 to 337 AD. Constantine was the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity. Although he lived most of his life as a pagan, he joined the Christian faith on his deathbed, being baptized by Eusebius of Nicomedia. Constantine was the Emperor during a dramatic event in 312 at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, after which Constantine claimed the emperorship in the West. According to these sources, Constantine looked up to the sun before the battle and saw a cross of light above it, and with it the Greek words "Ἐν Τούτῳ Νίκα" (in this sign, conquer), often rendered in a Latin version, "in hoc signo vinces" (in this sign, you will conquer). Constantine commanded his troops to adorn their shields with a Christian symbol (the Chi-Rho), and thereafter they were victorious. we also talked about the last leader of Rome who was Romulus Augustus. When he became emperor he was only 14 years old. Also he only ruled the Western Roman Empire from 31 October AD 475 until 4 September AD 476.
