Jesus spends three years preaching, is killed by Roman leaders. Jesus' followers believe he is the Messiah and Savior who has risen from the dead. Saul (the persecutor) becomes Paul (the evangelist), spreading Jesus' message (one true God, not Roman gods). Christianity evolves from cult status to established, official structure. priest, bishops, pope (Bishop of Rome) Christians and Jews were monotheistic (believing in one God) this conflicted with Roman beliefs persecution against both was common. Christianity appealed to the poor, and since there were many poor, their numbers grew as it grew, even some Roman leaders embraced Christianity AD 313: Constantine has a battlefield conversion He issues the Edict of Milan Not only no persecution, but actual approval of Christianity, eventually making it the official religion of Rome the Roman Empire and Christianity are now linked in power and influence AD 180: Rome has problems economic (trade became risky; taxes were too high; food ...
Today in class we talked about Constantine who was a Roman Emperor of Illyrian and Greek origin from 306 to 337 AD. Constantine was the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity. Christianity in the Pax Romana: A new religion in the empire Christianity- Roots It all begins with Jesus... - Most of what we know of Jesus comes from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John - "Gospel" means "good news" Who's Jesus? - Jesus was a Jewish itinerant preacher in Judea who set himself apart from other "Messiahs" - Jesus taught God's personal relationship to each human being - Message of love More roots: - Jesus' followers believed he was the "Messiah" who had come to end the world and bring the truly faithful into the Kingdom of God - Jesus was believed to be both man and the Son of God; both human and divine - Jesus was deemed a threat to Roman rule and was crucified, though his followers believed he rose from the dead and ascended to heaven - The 12 followers of Jesus who attempted to spread the word of his teachings were known as Apostles Start spreading the news: - Paul of Tarsus...
Today in Western Civilization we had a substitute and in the beginning, we started taking notes out of the textbook most people were almost finished but the main thing that the textbook was focusing on was how Religion influenced civilization and how Religion was not very big until the rise of Christianity also it talked about how alot of people were persecuted for being Christians because not many of the big important people agreed with Christianity and this made some people get into arguments and this also leads to people being killed if they didnt have the same beliefs as you did which is also a big them in the Bible Jesus was killed because other people didnt gree with his beliefs. But everyone finished so we got to do work for our other classes Comments
